While serving as the interim pastor at Tiburon, Dr. Shouse made it perfectly clear that he was the interim and that the pastor search committee should seek the Lord's leadership in the selection of the next pastor of TBC. In 2008, after several months of work, the committee returned to John and indicated that God had led them to him. John restated that he was the interim and that they should get back to work. A couple of months later, they returned asking John to pray about becoming TBC's sixth pastor. John prayed and the Lord opened the door to his being called to serve as lead pastor while continuing his full-time role as professor of Christian Theology at Golden Gate. John is married to Stephanie and they live in Novato.
John is the author of An Introduction to Christian Worship and is active in the professional theater, most recently in Equity productions of William Shakespeare. Dr. Shouse is also a performing illusionist and a member of the Fellowship of Christian Magicians. He has written numerous professional papers and publications, been featured speaker at conferences throughout the country, and has regularly been involved in pulpit supply and interim pastorates.
John is a native of Washington, D.C. and has served churches in Texas, Kentucky, Connecticut, and the District of Columbia. Dr. Shouse has also been an adjunct professor at Austin Presbyterian Seminary; adjunct professor of religion at St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas; Garret Fellow in Systematic Theology at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky; guest lecturer for the Bible Chair at the University of Texas; and a Visiting Scholar at Fuller Seminary, St. Andrews University, and the Graduate Theological Union.
John's academic history includes a B.A. from Oberlin College, M.Div. & S.T.M. from Yale University and Ph.D. from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
Stephen became youth minister at Tiburon in October 2011. His passion is to make disciples of Jesus Christ locally, nationally, and internationally. He hopes to see the youth of Tiburon grow into disciples who know Christ, love Christ, and share Christ on a daily basis. Since moving to Marin in 2010, Stephen’s heart has been broken for the young people of the area. He sees a drastic need for relevant, relational ministry to the middle school and high school students of Marin. He believes God has huge things in store for this generation and can’t wait to see Him use them to reach the world for Christ.
Before serving at Tiburon, Stephen and his wife, Laura, served as interns to college students at San Francisco Mandarin Baptist Church. Newly married in July 2010, Stephen and Laura moved to California from Mississippi to attend seminary at Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary. Stephen has served as a youth minister for 2 years in Mississippi while a student at the University of Mississippi. Stephen was highly involved in the Baptist Student Union in Mississippi serving as a summer missionary, a freshmen group-leader, a summer mission’s recruiter, and president during his senior year. God has grown his heart for missions while serving as a domestic and international missionary to Alaska, China, Turkey and Slovakia in the past few years.
Stephen is a student at Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary in pursuit of a Master of Divinity and hopes to pursue a PhD following graduation.
